Collections care

The collections department is responsible for properly storing exhibits, ensuring their safety, and preserving them. It develops collections and makes them available for scientific, educational, and exhibition purposes. The museum collections include over 1,500 exhibits related to the functioning of the former German concentration camp Stutthof and its sub-camps. Due to their unique nature, these objects testify to the suffering and primitive conditions thousands endured and to efforts to preserve humanity behind Stutthof’s barbed wires. The museum’s collections include, among others:

  1. Artifacts related to the functioning of the former German concentration camp Stutthof – equipment from the barracks inhabited by prisoners, the camp hospital and crematorium, instruments of terror, and objects related to the extermination process.
  2. Personal belongings that the prisoners brought to the camp and that were confiscated from them.
  3. Items for personal use illegally made by prisoners in the camp and illegal artistic works of prisoners: decorative caskets, cigarette cases, ashtrays, jewelry, spoons, drawings, portraits, and diaries.
  4. Artifacts belonging to SS crew members: dog tags, military decorations, whips and batons, dishes from the SS canteen.
  5. Artifacts belonging to SS crew members: dog tags, military decorations, whips and batons, dishes from the SS canteen.
