1962

Creation of the Museum. Director Tadeusz Matusiak

The Museum was established by the Presidium of the Provincial National Council in Gdańsk under resolution No. 62/XIII62. It resulted from numerous years of efforts exerted by former inmates and people of science, media, and culture. The director’s duties were delegated to the historian Tadeusz Matusiak.

1963

Collecting accounts from former inmates. 

The Museum’s professional staff started writing down the accounts of the former prisoners. Over the following years, they were collected in 27 volumes.

1964

Unveiling the obelisk with the name “Stutthof.”

A concrete monument, popularly known as the “Entry Accent,” was placed in front of the museum entrance. It was designed by Wiktor Tołkin. Besides its commemorative function, the obelisk is also a signpost.

1965

Unveiling of the 21 stone blocks commemorating the New Camp

In the area where the New Camp was, stone blocks were put up to mark the spots where the barracks were destroyed in the last phase of the camp’s existence and during the post-war period.

1968

Unveiling of the Monument to Struggle and Martyrdom

On the 23rd anniversary of the camp’s liberation, a monument by Wiktor Tołkin was unveiled. The ceremony was attended by representatives of the authorities, the young, and residents of the Gdańsk Voivodeship. The monument consists of two parts. The vertical one symbolizes struggle, and the horizontal one symbolizes martyrdom.

1972

Director Mirosław Gliński

Mirosław Gliński, who previously headed the Museum’s Science and Research Department, was appointed the director, replacing Tadeusz Matusiak who resigned from the position.

1975

The commemoration of the location of the cremation pyre. 

An information board and a commemoration were put on the site where a field crematorium operated at the turn of 1944/1945. 

1977

Director Janina Grabowska

Janina Grabowska, a graduate of the Faculty of History of the Higher Pedagogical School in Gdańsk, worker of the Science and Research Department of the Stutthof Museum, was appointed director of the Museum.

1981

Cross in Remembrance of Christian Martyrdom in KL Stutthof

A Cross in Remembrance of Christian Martyrdom in KL Stutthof was placed between the crematorium and the gas chamber. The location of the cross refers to the first mass celebrated in 1947.

2004

Director Romuald Drynko

After the retirement of Janina Grabowska-Chałka, the previous deputy director, Romuald Drynko, was appointed the new director. 

2007

Director Piotr Tarnowski

In November 2007, Piotr Tarnowski was appointed director of the Stutthof Museum. He previously worked at the Prime Minister’s Chancellery and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, where he was involved in issues related to martyrdom museums and memorial sites.

New name of the Museum: Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo. German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1939 – 1945)

By the decision of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, the full name of the Museum is the Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo. German Nazi Concentration and Extermination Camp (1939 – 1945), and its short name is Stutthof Museum in Sztutowo.
